REPLACEMENT CHECKS · UPDATED OCTOBER 3, 2026
A Checklist for Replacing a CNC Spindle
Build a record of the existing installation before selecting a replacement. The goal is to identify what must match and what would require a machine change.
Record the unit that is actually installed.
Photograph the complete nameplate, spindle nose, mount and rear connections. Copy the full code, including suffixes, and record which values are readable. Keep an unreadable or missing value as a question. A similar catalog name is a lead for investigation, not evidence of interchangeability.
Record the machine model, toolholder or collet, drive model and the operating speed used for the work. Include any installation modifications that may explain why the existing unit differs from a standard drawing.
Check how the spindle is supported.
Measure the body or clamp diameter, usable support length, fixing holes, nose projection and rear clearance. Compare these measurements with the exact outline, including connectors and cylinders. Do not clamp a surface merely because it fits inside a bracket.
GDF46-18Z/2.2 illustrates a shared code with different mount structures. GDZ-23 and GDZ-23-1 illustrate nearby codes with 80 mm and 85 mm bodies. Both cases require a physical configuration check before reusing the mount.
Keep the tooling and release requirements visible.
For a manual spindle, check the specified collet interface, nut clearance and tool-shank requirements. A nose thread that is disputed or not listed must be confirmed independently. For ATC, check taper, holder retention, pneumatic release and sensor functions.
Include photographs of the existing holders and release connections. An ATC installation may also require changes to the tool rack, control sequence and interlocks. The spindle power rating cannot resolve those details.
Compare electrical settings, not just output power.
Check the documented winding voltage/current pair, rated speed and frequency, pole count where specified, and any separate maximum or curve conditions. Verify the drive output capability and the machine control settings against the supplied spindle documentation.
GDZ-27 and GDZ-27-2 share a 4.5 kW rated output and nominal 100 mm body, but their rated points are 24,000 rpm/400 Hz and 30,000 rpm/500 Hz. Matching dimensions does not make their electrical settings the same.
Make unresolved checks part of the order discussion.
Compare cooling, fan wiring, pneumatic connections and sensing hardware. List open items, including any conflict between the nameplate and drawing. A drawing image may preserve an original discrepancy; that discrepancy still needs to be resolved before relying on the affected value.
Send the checklist with the inquiry and attach photographs in your email application. Ask for the exact documents needed for installation. The catalog comparison is a preparation step; it does not establish a ready-to-install replacement.
- Full code and readable nameplate values
- Mounting and complete envelope comparison
- Tooling, cooling and release connections
- Drive capability and documented settings
- Open discrepancies and required documents
Questions before you choose.
Can matching power and diameter be enough?
Check tooling, usable clamp area, complete dimensions, drive settings, cooling and control connections as well. Shared headline values do not establish interchangeability.
What should I do with conflicting current values?
Identify the conflict and ask for the correct supplied-unit specification. Do not size the drive from an unresolved current value.
